GPU Dropping to 0% Load causing game freezing

Post by xkro » Wed Nov 13, 2019 8:29 am

I Just built my new computer right before LAN and started playing COD:MW I was having trouble with my game just freezing for 1-8 seconds at a time. (Entire computer freezes, can't move mouse but I can hear audio still. Can't even open task manager or alt tab.) At first it was at the start of every match about 5 seconds in, than I disabled Bluetooth and it seemed to fix it. Then started randomly doing it mid match. Was watching the heat, and other details when I noticed every time that my GPU was dropping to 0% load. I ran a RAM diagnostic and had no issues there. The temperatures are sitting between 50*-55* when playing CoD. Would love some help, I've updated all the drivers for GPU, CPU, and Chipset.

A quick google search seems that AMD has had this problem for years now, but everyone just kind of thinks they know what causes it. Any attempts on the AMD Support Forum go un-answered.

EDIT: I also noticed at the same time my memory goes from around 50% to 98%ish at the same time. Don't know if the GPU causes the memory, or vice versa.

I don't know if I would pay much attention to the 0 load. If the system is freezing you'd have a zero load regardless if the GPU was at fault.

Make sure you have the latest drivers from MSI and you may want to check for a BIOS update as well.

I'd probably switch to testing with benchmarks for now. They provide a predictable load and are able to create more targeted stress if you want to pressure individual components more heavily. Start with HCI's memtest. Memory errors cause a whole host of issues so you want to make sure that is stable.

You can also check the Windows event viewer to see if there are any relevant warnings or errors around the time you experience a problem. Just be aware not everything is captured there and there are some errors which will show up just because the system crashed.

I went and double checked on all the drivers. I updated my MoBo driver and I also did the HIC MemTest and came up with 0 errors. I'm running out of ideas.

The event viewer also doesn't show anything when it freezes.

Just a thought, but is your PSU powerful enough for the card? Do you have a spare PSU you could test with?

To my knowledge it's enough, PCPartPicker and another website said I would just need a 500w. So I figured 50% more power would be enough? I don't know how to properly tell if I need more power. But no, I don't have a more powerful PSU.

According to Tom's Hardware, the GPU peaks around 250w

So now I'd try to see if either GPU or CPU stress causes it. You could start with Prime95 since that will be exclusively CPU and see if you generate a crash.

I borrowed a buddies 1080. I've been running for about 3 hours now, it sits at about 20% usage which seems to be a thing with CoD. But no spikes or freezing yet. Exact same specs. Around 110fps.'

I ran IntelBurnTest to test the CPU, says the CPU is stable after running for 100%.
Also ran a GPU benchmark, and it sat at around 99-100% usage for about 30 minutes, no problems. Starting to think it's just because of CoD.

I don't know which one to look at, NZXT Cam and MSI Afterburner both say my GPU is around 60-65c during gaming, but MSI Kombustor says it's at around 82-86c.

Sometimes running multiple monitoring tools can throw off readings. If you're at 20% load then 60c sounds reasonable.

Hello, say why The event observer shows no events?
What do you mean? I had the event viewer open. When the game would freeze, there were no new messages for errors or anything.
