When did you join PDX & why?

Post by Ghostwalker » Mon Jul 16, 2018 4:33 pm

Remaking my new account here got me to thinking about when I was first introduced to PDXLAN.
We'd been running WVG for a little while, and a couple of our members had made the trek to Portland from Eugene (Heh, now I road-trip up from LA...) to go to this massive LAN party. They had come back and told us about how amazing it was... Hundreds of gamers in one place for a weekend, playing the poop out of BF1942, talking shop & video games in Flirts, and generally having a great time.

PDXLAN 8 was my first, and it was amazing...
We'd made the decision to come up as a group, and if I remember correctly there were 10-12 of us at the time. We started our tradition of getting together at the AMPM in Gateway to fuel up, make a quick trip to the liquor store, and to get on the road to Fry's to see if there was anything that we just couldn't live without, and to take advantage of the selection of computer parts & electronics at your finger tips.
Even the slog up the 205 wasn't terrible. The time passed relatively quickly because we were carpooling 3-4 to a car, and chatting about what games we wanted to play, what it was going to be like, and who'd found sweet deals on hardware that they could show off at the LAN and on Hard OCP.

After getting checked into the hotel, figuring out who was in which room, and raiding the ice machines so that we could get our Jaeger on ice in the bathroom sinks, we went down to the convention center to check into the LAN. (Note to old self in case time travel ever becomes a thing... Don't lug a 17" Viewsonic in line. Leave that poop in the car until you get your badge... :P )

I remember that we got set up pretty quickly at Table 8, and then went walking around to see what was what... I swear, it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. It was like I'd stepped into Wonderland. Sure, there were some beige boxes, but people had cut holes in the sides for custom fans, and had really slick looking fan shrouds from games like CounterStrike, Descent, and Hexen that just made them look special. And the lights. In pockets of the hall, there were gleaming cold cathode tubes in blue and green that were lit up like the freakin' future. So many creative ways that people were customizing their machines and making them uniquely theirs. It was actually awe inspiring...
(I hopped on to xoxide.com after getting home from that LAN and started looking at all of the modifications I could find. Did you know that they made a 5 1/4 bay cigarette lighter and ashtray combo? So much craziness...)

After taking in the sights, we sat down to get some gaming done, and that's when disaster struck. A few people at the end of our table had a couple of power strips for their rigs. A quick surge of juice, some really loud pops, and suddenly the entire area smelled like ozone with at least one of the machines visibly smoking. It was one of those moments that you dread while taking your computer anywhere.
There wasn't anyone tearing these guys down for using power strips instead of surge protectors, just a ton of people (once everyone figured out that the machines weren't going to literally explode...) stepping in to offer advice, help test parts, and arrange loaner equipment to try and help them salvage the weekend and still be able to play. If I remember correctly, at least 2 of the machines were able to get up and running again with only a few loaner parts, and only 1 was completely toast, and someone had a spare rig that they were able to borrow.

The first PDX raffle I ever witnessed was when I *really* fell in love with this community.
I don't remember who had won what, or who it was (I was still super-new to all of this...), but one of the raffle prize winners announced that they were going to donate the part they'd won to the people that had let the smoke out of their machines. And like an avalanche of PLUR, it just kept coming. Person after person donating some amazing and, at the time, really valuable hardware to help other gamers be able to rebuild their lost systems. They didn't ask for anything in exchange, they just wanted to help them out. It was amazing, and I was hooked.

That's my PDX origin story. :P What's yours?

I was working at BestBuy with Notoes and he was telling me about this kick ass "thing" where people "LAN". Of course I had to check it out. First PDXLAN was 3.04 (PDXLAN 3, 2004). Been coming on and off ever since.

I was working at a little computer store called PC Club, when this person walked in that I had never seen before and started talking about a Lan party he was going to host. That is when I first met Vector! Haven't missed a PDXLan yet!

Awesome story Drew, it is these stories that have continued over the years that make coming back to each event part of the amazing group of people that have been built around the PDXLAN events.

My first PDXLAN was PDXLAN 20 February 2012 with Edwin, Tyler and John. After the next one or two PDXLANs of sitting in the same area and meeting people we talked about forming a group and Table 24 group was created.

I had heard Nitemayr and Kraint talking for years about this LAN party they went to all the time. In 2012 I made a new machine because my old one couldn't run the new games and I figured what the hell, I'll go see what it's about. There were still a few seats left to Nov 2012 LAN so I grabbed one and then I've been with the TLS group every LAN since.

Someone that I worked with said "Hey, I had a school project where I helped staff a LAN party, want to help?"

I've been staffing ever since!

In 2005-2006, I joined a Battlefield 2 team that also had a chapter for their Counterstrike: Source team, which is what I was on. A majority of the clan all lived in Portland, OR on both teams. I was practicing with them daily and they told me about PDXLAN coming up. Funny turn of events, one of the team members spent too long on her make-up and caused our entire BF2 team to miss the tournament at PDXLAN.

I got to meet the people I've been playing all day everyday with for the first time! Of course I've lost connection with them when I took a break from gaming and Xfire is no longer a thing, which was my only way of connecting with my friends.

Cool story bro.

FUN FACT: At PDXLAN 2007 I MAY or MAY not have took out one of the event sponsors to a dance club that night... hmm. XD :D

My fist PDXLAN was PDXLAN5 aka freezer LAN. Still have some mousepads and water bottle holders from it.
Took a few events off and got back into the PDXLAN scene at PDXLAN9, I think. Been going for quite some with with a short hiatus.

PDXLAN 2.04 was my first event. I was a newbie pc gamer that was obsessed with LAN parties. I stumbled upon PDXLAN while searching things like Million Man Lan, Dreamhack, and The Gathering. Glad I found it :)

I joined the forums after meeting NRP guys in BF4 in the old PdXlan bf4 server. My paintball friend John T. said that he attended the lans a few times and that he would go with me. Three years later I made it myself. I wanted to come check it out since all my kids play games a lot but we dont have PC's for all of them sadly.
So PDXLan 32-b was my first event ever. I built a wood stand for my case and monitor with LEDs. After coming to the lan I know that I want to go all I can and get more of my friends involved as well as my kids. I hope to make it to November but we shall see. Budget is low and tickets are running out. Wish me luck.

Many years ago, my clanmates, {pdX}implodeme and {pdX}mindseye said, "your coming to this lan thing". The fun had at that lan keeps me coming back. Vector put me in charge of the lights 8 years or so ago, I was the self proclaimed "lighting director" after that. That position has been, like the Holiday Inn, retired. Hoping for sound engineer job next...*wink wink*

First PDXLan I went to was PDXlan 4. Decided to check out PDXLan because my friends and I were doing almost weekly small lans at friends houses and such and saw this referenced in a forum I used to frequent a lot back then. I skipped a couple after 4 but have been going to every whole number lan since :)

I was introduced to the event in 2014 by some new friends I met at PAX Prime 2014 (friends of a friend I went with) and it sounded AMAZING but couldn't go. I didn't have a working desktop rig at that point, I built it in late 2015 from parts donated by friends/gifts from family but had to pack it away for a year with deployment. Now, fast forward to 2018 and re-connecting with my same friends that brought up PDXLAN again. This time, I had the money and time to attend so to 32-B I went, my first PDXLAN and LAN over 60+ participants :O What a time!

PDX 3.04 was my first major LAN I had ever been to. Sat in the infamous EX seating! I was a Junior in high school back then. I had just started getting into LAN parties overall and PDX was a gateway to everything for me. Without it I wouldn't have most of the friends I do today.

Been a long time now but it was either at a Geforce LAN or the Newegg LANfest someone mentioned PDXLAN. As the parties here in California became fewer & farther between I finally decided to make the trek North. A PDXLAN trip is a big investment of time and money for me but I'm glad I took the chance. :)
At a bus station, a bus stops. At a train station, a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

My first PDX LAN was summer of 2016. I live in Arizona and am a member of a local LAN group where we get together once a month or so at a member's house and game it up. One of our members was Matt B, aka Dink, a staff member now. He told us of the fun and a few of us made the trip to Portland. I got hooked. He since moved back to Portland, but I just fly back and forth for each event, bringing any friends along the way that are willing to travel. The Double event this past June was great and I can't wait for November.

My first PDX LAN was just last year, summer of 2017! My best friend talked me up about it in February after he had attended FebLan with a big group of his friends from Gresham. He had this crazy idea about making everyone signs with the seagull from Finding Nemo on them so we could all chant and yell whenever any of us won anything. I walked into LAN that July not knowing what to expect and I was blown away, all the cool rigs, the crazy amount of RGB everything, all the people milling around talking about builds and helping each other set up. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before and I was mesmerized, we walked back to the 2nd to last row and I was told that everyone on that side of tables 1 and 2 were with us and I was a tad intimidated to be gaming side by side with a bunch of people I'd never met, but everyone said hello and introduced themselves from the discord I'd joined with them a few months before if we had met and before long I felt like part of the crew! Going on monster runs to the tub, ordering in food, grouping up for the presentations and competitions, it was a total blast.

I was a tad bummed when I found out a majority of them didn't attend November Lan, but my girlfriend joined us for Feb Lan this year(Santa Vector is still my favorite sign we've done), I managed to go to Vector lan solo and then our group was back again for 32B enmasse. Now we get to see everyone again in a few short months for the first Fall LAN and I couldn't be more excited

From garage lans to classmate who also PDXLAN'ed suggested we check out PDXLAN.

4.05 was first (won a pistol mouse!)
5.05 I froze to death.
6 I became staff
Continued until 21/22?

All in between attended mains, Novembers, and vector lans.

Some notable events run by PDXLAN I was attending or staffing.. PDXWAN (This was ages ago lol) & AMD Fan Fest in San Jose (The one day BF4 Tourney some of the LAN Staff ran & a couple of California Attendees came and saw us at).

AMD event was back to back with the November LAN in 2013..

Got out of the gaming and lanning due to focusing more on School and a girl. Graduated, married said girl & now have a kid.. So no time for games. Once hes old enough I can train him to beat people in FPS'

I still occasionally play CS:GO.. I could game more but I dont have the video card for it, and my moneys going to other hobbies...

PDXLAN 20 - Finally had it land on my birthday when I didn't already have birthday plans.
Largo brought me a cake.
I will stop coming when someone asks me not to come back and not a day before.

Formed a group out of table mates and friends at PDXLAN 22.

I honestly don't remember how I even heard about PDXLAN, but I've been to every one since 10.5 (November 2007). Some friends and I started GoD for the Left 4 Dead tournament (with I think it was Sprinkles on our team) at I think PDXLAN 14, that was the cash sponsored tournament by Alienware, I have that check somewhere need to find it!Then at PDXLAN 16 or 17 we started as an actual group for seats and have been doing that ever since.
