Poll: Where are your games installed?

Post by Vector » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:09 am

For me:
Games that I play a lot: M.2 NVMe
Steam and Origin: On a raided (stripe) set of 1TB SSD's (2TB capacity)
The only thing on Platter anymore is Media and long term storage.

I need to seriously upgrade my capacity:

* Two 500GB SSD in RAID1 for OS and slow-to-load games (looking at you, GTA V)
* 2TB Platter for everything else

Technically I have FFXV installed on my M.2 but I've barely played that. Most games are on SSD but when I had too many installed I would overflow LAN games on to my WD black. Now tho it's all SSD ;)

My OS and a couple of games are on a 500GB M.2 NVMe.
I have four 250GB SSDs exclusively for games, and do not store any media on my gaming machine.
My current computer is my first without any platter drives.

On my next computer I will take it a step further and will only have two M.2 drives. No platter drives, no 2.5" SSDs.
As a fan of cable management (I'm OCD about this), this is a dream come true!

Things that take a long time to load (i.e., GTAV) on my NVMe drive, most on my SATA SSD, and rarely played games, media, and backups on my 6TB spinner.

New system: New NVMe drive will replace both the old NVMe and the SATA SSD. 970 Pro, YO!

All of my games are on platters, my SSD is small so it's only for the OS :)

I try to keep my NVME down to OS and a couple of games that I play pretty frequently.
The "bulk" of my Steam/Origin/Uplay library lives on SSDs, and I've got a few miscellaneous games that live on a WD spinning drive that used primarily for data/stagnant files.

I think that it's going to be a gradual progression to phase out the spinning disk when I eventually bump up to larger M.2's, and will be a ripple down the chain.

Mixture of SATA SSD (in RAID 0) and platter drives. Mind you my system is like 7 years old so NVME drives weren't even out back then. My next system is going to be all NVME internally with USB platter drives as storage.

A bit of a trick answer..

I was using an ssd and platter until I won an nvme drive in the November charity raffle THANKS WD! Now I use the NVME and the 4TB platter, but everything, including the OS, is installed on the platter. The NVME has no data per se. I am using them both in conjunction with a SW program called Primo Cache. The nvme is the cache- storing the blocks that I use most often (such as OS and frequently played games and files accessed). So, my system has the feel of a big ass SSD without the big ass price :)
