Gaming without Windows(OS)

Post by Vector » Wed Aug 01, 2018 1:29 pm

As Microsoft plans towards the future indicate "Desktop as a Service" monthly/yearly charge like office, I am beginning to think about gaming's viability on linux based operating systems.

In your experience, where are we in terms of compatibility of games with a linux flavored OS? What about gaming hardware drivers?

What (if any) PC-games do you play in a non-windows OS?

Paging Pietzahh!

But in seriousness, between native Steam app support in Linux and Wine development I think Linux is very capable as a gaming OS these days. I've been really tempted to jump in with both feet recently, after watching Pietz game in Linux at several LANs.
And with the clicking, came the ticking, of the page that was no more.

This list might help quell the anxiety. (it does for me)

Wendell form L1 Techs spends a lot of his time thinking about this very thing. He just did a video with Linus about the current state and is starting a series on implementation:

Here's a screenshot of some of my favorites that run on Ubuntu natively (Wine not needed). Of the 238 games I own on Steam, 151 have a native Linux binary.

Basically anything that is built on Unity or Unreal engine can be cross-compiled to Linux, it's just a matter of the developers getting enough interest to start compiling for Linux (it's a checkbox in these engines).

If I'm ever even remotely interested in a game, it's an instant buy if I discover that it runs on Linux; cost doesn't matter. I'm a true believer in voting with one's wallet.

PS; I received no ping.

An interesting addition to this conversation, Valve is seemingly working on a way of making Windows Steam games playable on Linux.
I hope this is because they found the existing tools insufficient and not because they wanted to do their own thing. I would much prefer they contribute to an existing project rather than starting a new one of unknown licensing. :wut:

yeah, it would have been great if they'd thrown their weight behind wine... but it's definitely possible they decided they'd be better off with a fresh start, wine is quite old, who knows how much technical debt, etc. has collected in there.

At its heart is a customized, modified version of the WINE Windows-on-Linux compatibility layer named Proton.
